(waves this deep love)

waves this deep love
my second lover
returns
vapor to the nostrils
seethes from the sand
a broken bottle
repairs itself beneath the silt
uncoils her
and me

ashore.

my synogogue has a monthly newsletter. in the lattest issue, fifteen of my lines appear:

Savaged buildings
reek of desecrated offerings.
Eternal burning,
curtains of the Kadosh Kedoshim
torn away. Smoke rises from
the holy cities -- eyes turn,
eyes tear, eyes close --
the incense of sacrifice
stains every generation.

America wails.
Wind lifts bone ash,
soot floats over snares, rises,
and sets on every sill:
and everywhere indelible is this
internment of flesh.

Kadosh Kedoshim means 'holy of holies' and refers to the innermost chamber of the Temple; rituals were performed here by priests on behalf of worshippers.
